Your automatic transmission uses fluid for two jobs — lubrication and cooling. Inside the torque converter and clutch packs, enormous friction is generated every time the transmission shifts or slips. The fluid absorbs that heat and carries it to a cooler, usually mounted in front of the radiator.

P0218 sets when the Transmission Control Module (TCM) detects fluid temperature has exceeded a safe operating threshold — typically above 260°F (127°C). At that temperature, transmission fluid begins to oxidize. It turns dark, loses viscosity, and stops protecting the internal components it is supposed to shield.

The fluid should be bright red or pink and translucent, sitting between the MIN and MAX marks. Dark brown or black fluid means it has been overheated and oxidized — it needs to be changed regardless of any other repair. Low fluid level points directly to a leak that needs to be found and fixed. Do not just top up and move on; find the source.

Inspect the external transmission coolerLook in front of your radiator — there is usually a smaller radiator-like unit with fins. This is the external transmission cooler. Check live transmission temperature dataIf you have an OBD2 scanner with live data capability, start the engine cold and watch the Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) reading. At cold start it should read close to ambient air temperature — typically 50°F to 80°F (10°C to 27°C) depending on the season. If it reads an obviously impossible value like 300°F at cold startup, the temperature sensor itself has failed and is generating a false P0218. A shop that quotes a transmission rebuild without first confirming that the cooler is functioning and the fluid is in good condition is skipping the basics.
