Your car's ECM (Engine Control Module) or PCM (Powertrain Control Module) is the main computer that controls fuel delivery, ignition timing, emissions systems, and on most modern vehicles, the transmission as well. P0606 means that computer has run a self-diagnostic test and found a fault inside its own processor.

Think of it as the computer equivalent of a blue screen of death. The ECM has a built-in watchdog circuit that monitors its own CPU operations. When the watchdog detects that the processor isn't responding correctly — whether due to corrupted software, unstable power supply, or actual hardware failure — it sets P0606 and typically illuminates the check engine light immediately.

Check engine light — solid

Limp mode / reduced power
The ECM restricts engine output to protect the drivetrain. Acceleration feels sluggish and top speed may be limited to highway-entry speeds.
Stalling or no-start

Erratic idle or rough running

🔧 What to Check First

These three checks address the most common causes and require no specialist tools. Do all three before allowing anyone to quote you an ECM replacement. In well over half of P0606 cases, the answer is somewhere in this list.

Load-test the battery and inspect the terminals A standard voltmeter showing 12.4V doesn't tell you whether the battery can deliver current under load. Take the vehicle to any auto parts store and ask for a free battery load test — they clamp a tester directly to the terminals and simulate cranking conditions. While you're there, inspect both terminals for white or greenish corrosion. Clean them with a wire brush and a baking soda solution if they're not bright metal. A corroded terminal produces the same voltage instability as a failing battery.

Check alternator output voltage With the engine running and all accessories off, a healthy alternator should read between 13.5V and 14.7V at the battery terminals. Below 13.5V means the battery is not being properly recharged. Above 15V means the regulator is failing and is actively damaging the ECM's power supply. An inexpensive multimeter is all you need. Check at idle, then again with the headlights and blower motor running — voltage should stay in range under load.

Inspect all ECM ground connections Locate the ECM (check your vehicle's service manual — it is commonly mounted on the firewall, inner fender, or behind the battery). Trace the ground strap from the ECM to the chassis and check the bolt connection at both ends. It should be tight and corrosion-free. Do the same for the main battery-to-chassis ground strap. A loose or corroded chassis ground is invisible to any scanner — it will never show as a code on its own — but it can cause every system in the vehicle to misbehave simultaneously.
