Your automatic transmission shifts through gears using hydraulic pressure and a set of clutch packs. Each gear has a specific ratio — a precise relationship between how fast the engine spins and how fast the output shaft turns. Your Transmission Control Module (TCM) watches two sensors constantly: the input speed sensor and the output speed sensor.

P0731 means: the ratio the TCM is seeing in first gear does not match what it expects. The TCM commanded first gear, but the math between those two sensors came back wrong. Something is slipping, not engaging, or being commanded incorrectly.

💡 "Incorrect ratio" does not always mean mechanical failure. The TCM calculates ratio from sensor data — a bad sensor, degraded fluid, or a faulty solenoid can all trigger P0731 without any internal transmission damage at all.

With the engine off, locate this connector and inspect it carefully. Look for green or white corrosion inside the pins, any bent or pushed-back terminals, and whether the connector clicks firmly into place.
