🔍 What This Code Means

Your engine has two key rotating shafts: the crankshaft (driven by the pistons) and the camshaft (which opens and closes the valves). These two must stay perfectly timed to each other — measured in degrees of rotation. P0016 means the ECM detected that the Bank 1 intake camshaft position is out of sync with the crankshaft by more than the allowed threshold.

On modern engines with variable valve timing (VVT), the camshaft is intentionally moved within a controlled range to optimize performance and fuel economy. P0016 fires when the actual camshaft position does not match where the computer commanded it to be — either too far advanced, too far retarded, or stuck in one position entirely.

Engine feels flat. Pressing the accelerator produces a delayed, weak response compared to normal.
Noticeable drop in fuel economy
When valve timing is off, combustion efficiency drops. The engine works harder and burns more fuel for the same output.
Rattling noise on cold start
A metallic rattle from the engine bay for 1–3 seconds after startup — particularly on cold mornings — is a classic timing chain wear symptom.
Check engine light only
In early-stage cases, the car may drive nearly normally. The code is the only visible sign — until the problem progresses further.

Check the oil — level, color, and viscosity Pull the dipstick with the engine cold. The oil should sit between the MIN and MAX marks. Wipe the dipstick on a white cloth — clean oil is amber or light brown; bad oil is black and gritty. Also confirm you are using the oil viscosity printed on the oil cap. On VVT engines, the wrong weight (say 10W-40 in an engine spec'd for 5W-20) can prevent the phaser from operating correctly. Listen on cold start — note any rattling Start the engine from cold (not recently driven) and immediately listen at the engine bay.
