Your engine's computer — the ECM — needs to know exactly where the camshaft is at every moment. It gets that information from the camshaft position sensor, a small device that reads a toothed wheel spinning with the cam and sends a steady pulse signal back to the ECM.

P0340 means the ECM looked for that signal on Bank 1, Sensor A and found nothing. The circuit went silent. Without cam position data, the computer cannot precisely time fuel injection and spark delivery — so it either runs rough, stalls, or refuses to start at all.

💡 "Bank 1" is the side of the engine containing cylinder #1. "Sensor A" refers to the intake camshaft sensor. On a 4-cylinder engine there is typically only one camshaft and one sensor — so P0340 means the only cam sensor signal has gone missing.

Sudden stalling while driving

Rough idle and misfires
When a partial signal is present, cylinders misfire because timing is erratic. Engine shudders at a stop and feels like it is about to die.
Hard starting when warm
Starts fine cold, but after reaching operating temperature — when connectors expand — the circuit loses contact and restarts become difficult or impossible.
Poor acceleration and hesitation
Pressing the gas produces a stumble or flat spot. The engine hesitates before pulling, especially from a stop or under heavy load.
Check engine light only (intermittent)
Some cases present with no drivability symptoms yet — the signal drops out briefly, the ECM logs the fault, and performance returns to normal temporarily.

How does the camshaft position sensor actually work?
