Your engine needs to know exactly how far you've pressed the accelerator at every moment. That job belongs to the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) — a small sensor mounted on the throttle body that converts pedal position into a voltage signal the ECM (engine computer) can read.

The TPS operates on a 5-volt reference circuit. At closed throttle (idle), it sends roughly 0.5 to 0.9 volts. At wide-open throttle, it sends around 4.5 volts. P0122 sets when the ECM sees a signal that drops below approximately 0.17 volts — far too low to represent a real throttle position.

💡 P0122 is a circuit fault, not necessarily a sensor fault. The wiring, connector, and reference voltage must all be checked before the sensor itself is condemned. Many P0122 cases are caused by something other than the TPS itself.

When the signal is that low, the ECM no longer trusts the throttle data. It may limit engine power, hold a fixed RPM, or shut fuel delivery down entirely. That is why drivability symptoms with P0122 can be so dramatic compared to other codes.

Intermittent check engine light
The light may come and go, especially if the fault is a loose connector that makes contact only sometimes.
Harsh or erratic shifting (automatic)
Automatic transmissions use TPS data for shift timing. A bad signal causes unexpected downshifts or delayed engagement.

🔧 What to Check First

Unplug and inspect the TPS connectorWith the key off, locate the TPS on the throttle body — it is the small sensor with a 3-wire connector on the side or top. Unplug it and look at the pins under good light. Green or white corrosion, bent pins, or moisture inside the connector are all P0122 causes. Spray the pins with electrical contact cleaner, let it dry, and firmly reseat the connector. Clear the code and test drive before doing anything else.

Check the 5-volt reference at the connectorSet a multimeter to DC voltage. With the connector unplugged, turn the key to the ON position (engine off). Probe between the reference voltage pin and the ground pin on the harness side of the connector — not the sensor side. You should read 4.8 to 5.2 volts. If the reference is absent or low, the problem is the wiring or ECM supply, not the sensor. There is no point replacing a TPS before confirming this.

This is the most common and most expensive mistake. A brand-new sensor will produce the exact same P0122 if the connector is corroded, the signal wire is shorted, or the reference voltage is missing. Swapping the sensor without confirming the circuit is healthy first is not a diagnosis — it is guesswork. Always verify the connector and voltage supply before ordering a part.

On vehicles where the TPS is built into the throttle body assembly, some shops quote the entire throttle body as the repair. Ask specifically whether the TPS can be replaced independently before authorizing a throttle body swap.
