Your engine needs to know exactly how far you are pressing the gas pedal at every moment. That job belongs to the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) — a small sensor mounted on the throttle body that converts pedal position into a voltage signal the ECU can read.

P0121 triggers when that voltage signal falls outside the range the ECU expects. A fully closed throttle should produce roughly 0.3–0.8V. Wide-open throttle should reach 4.2–4.8V. When the signal drops below, spikes above, or skips around erratically within those limits, the ECU flags P0121 — it cannot trust the data it is receiving.
