Your engine uses an oxygen sensor positioned upstream of the catalytic converter — before the exhaust gases have been treated. Its job is to cycle constantly between a low voltage signal (around 0.1V, indicating a lean mixture) and a high voltage signal (around 0.9V, indicating a rich mixture). That rapid switching is what tells the ECM whether to add or remove fuel.
P0132 is set when the ECM detects that this sensor — on Bank 1 (the side containing cylinder #1), Sensor 1 (the upstream sensor) — is producing a voltage that stays stuck above approximately 1.2V for longer than its programmed threshold, typically around 10 seconds. A signal locked that high tells the ECM the exhaust is constantly rich.
Here is the important nuance: the high voltage reading might be completely accurate. Your engine may genuinely be running rich — and the sensor is correctly reporting that. Or the sensor itself has failed and is sending false data to the ECM. P0132 alone cannot tell you which. That distinction determines whether you replace a sensor or fix a fuel delivery problem.
P0132 symptoms range from obvious to almost invisible. Because the ECM relies on the upstream O2 sensor to trim the fuel mixture in real time, a stuck-high signal means the computer is getting consistently bad feedback — and that affects how the engine runs.
Start at #1 and work down. On most P0132 cases, you will find the answer before you reach #4. Jumping straight to a sensor replacement without checking the wiring first is the most common — and most expensive — mistake.
