🔍 What This Code Means

Your engine runs on a precise mix of air and fuel. The ideal ratio is 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel. P0171 means your engine computer detected too much air — or too little fuel — on Bank 1. This condition is called "running lean."

The computer monitors the oxygen sensor in the exhaust. When it sees too much leftover oxygen, it tries to add more fuel to compensate. Your scanner will show this as Long Term Fuel Trim (LTFT) above +10% — the computer working overtime on a problem it cannot fix on its own.

💡 Bank 1 is the side of the engine containing cylinder #1. On most 4-cylinder engines that means the entire engine. On V6 and V8 engines Bank 1 is typically the front or driver's side.

This code does not mean your fuel pump has failed. It means the air-fuel balance is off — and in most cases the cause is something small, cheap, and easy to find yourself.

🔧 What to Check First

Do these three checks before spending any money. They take about 20 minutes and require no special tools. They resolve P0171 in the majority of cases.

Inspect all vacuum hoses and the intake bootWith the engine cold, trace every rubber hose connected to the intake system. Look for cracks, splits, or fittings that have popped loose. Pay close attention to the large rubber boot between the MAF sensor and the throttle body — this is the single most common failure point. Squeeze hoses at the bends; cracked rubber crumbles under pressure.

Pull and test the PCV valveThe PCV valve is a small plastic valve pressed into the valve cover with a hose attached. Pull it out and shake it near your ear. A healthy PCV valve rattles freely. Short distances only — a nearby shop or your daily commute is generally manageable. Sustained driving with a confirmed lean condition causes the engine to run hotter than designed. Over days this accelerates wear on pistons, cylinder walls, and valves. Do not ignore P0171 for more than a few days of regular use.
Why does P0171 keep coming back after I clear it?
Clearing the code removes the warning light, not the problem. The computer will re-detect the lean condition within 50–100 miles and set the code again. The only permanent fix is finding and correcting the root cause — starting with vacuum hose inspection and MAF sensor cleaning.
If P0171 and P0174 appear together, what does that mean?
Both banks running lean at the same time almost always points to a problem affecting the entire intake system. The two most likely causes are a dirty MAF sensor and a large vacuum leak at the intake manifold. Clean the MAF sensor first before anything else.
What does Long Term Fuel Trim (LTFT) tell me?
LTFT is the computer's ongoing correction to the fuel mixture. Healthy readings sit between -5% and +5%. P0171 typically appears when LTFT Bank 1 climbs above +10%. If LTFT improves significantly at higher RPM compared to idle, that pattern strongly suggests a vacuum leak. If LTFT stays high at all RPM ranges, the problem points more toward the MAF sensor or fuel delivery.
