Your engine uses an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve to redirect a measured amount of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. This lowers combustion temperatures and reduces harmful NOx emissions. The computer needs to know exactly how far open the valve is at any given moment — that is the job of the EGR position sensor, also called the EGR valve position sensor or DPFE sensor on some Ford vehicles.

P0405 sets when the signal voltage from the EGR position sensor circuit A drops below the expected minimum threshold — typically below approximately 0.3V. At key-on with the engine off and the EGR valve fully closed, the sensor should be sending roughly 0.5–0.9V. The computer sees a value lower than that and flags the circuit as faulty.

💡 "Circuit Low" in an OBD2 code always refers to voltage on the signal wire — not flow, not mechanical position. P0405 is an electrical fault first. Confirm the wiring is good before condemning the valve.

A low-voltage fault like this typically means one of three things: a short to ground somewhere in the signal wire, a bad sensor that can no longer produce a clean voltage output, or heavy carbon buildup physically jamming the valve and sensor in a position the computer interprets as an electrical fault. The EGR valve itself is only to blame in a minority of cases.

P0405 symptoms range from almost invisible to obviously disruptive. How bad it feels depends on how far out of range the sensor reading actually is and whether the PCM has gone into a limp or fallback mode.

Check engine light on
The most consistent symptom. P0405 almost always triggers the MIL immediately on the first detection cycle.
Rough idle or engine stumble
If the EGR valve is stuck open due to carbon buildup, exhaust gas bleeds into the intake at idle — where it does not belong. RPMs become unstable and the engine may shake.
Hesitation on light acceleration
Low-speed throttle tip-in feels sluggish or unresponsive. The engine stumbles briefly before catching. Most noticeable in stop-and-go traffic.
Failed emissions test
With P0405 active, the EGR readiness monitor will show incomplete or failed. The vehicle cannot pass a state emissions inspection while this code is present.
Reduced fuel economy
The PCM may run a richer mixture as a fallback when it cannot trust the EGR position signal, burning more fuel than necessary under normal driving conditions.
No noticeable symptoms
Some vehicles store P0405 with zero drivability change. The check engine light is the only indication, particularly on engines with more tolerant EGR fallback strategies.

🔧 What to Check First

Run through these three checks before ordering any parts. Two of them require no tools at all, and together they resolve P0405 in the majority of cases. Skip to the parts counter and you risk replacing a perfectly good EGR valve assembly.

Inspect the EGR sensor connector and wiring Locate the EGR valve — typically on or near the intake manifold. Unplug the connector and look inside with a flashlight. Green or white corrosion on the terminals causes resistance that drops voltage. Wiggle the harness along its run toward the firewall and watch for pinched or chafed insulation where wires pass near hot engine components or sharp brackets. A corroded connector can often be cleaned with electrical contact cleaner and a fine wire brush for a no-cost fix.

Check live EGR sensor voltage with a scan tool With the engine off and key on (KOEO), navigate to live data on your scanner and find the EGR position sensor voltage or EGR valve position percentage. A healthy closed-valve reading should be between 0.5V and 0.9V. If the reading shows 0.0V or a negative value, you have either a wiring short to ground or a fully failed sensor. If the reading is within range at KOEO but drifts low with the engine running, carbon buildup restricting valve movement is the more likely cause.

Remove and inspect the EGR valve for carbon buildup Remove the EGR valve (usually 2–3 bolts, 10–15 minutes). Look inside the valve opening with a flashlight. A light coating of soot is normal. A thick, flaky carbon crust that visibly restricts the valve pintle is not — and is worth cleaning before condemning the part. Use EGR valve cleaner spray only; carburetor cleaner can damage the sensor element on electronic EGR valves. Allow to dry completely before reinstalling. Clear the code and drive two full warm-up cycles before evaluating.

P0405 is one of the most frequently misdiagnosed codes in the EGR family. These three repair recommendations come up constantly — and they are often completely unnecessary.

⚠ Misdiagnosis #1 — Full EGR valve assembly replaced without checking the wiring first
A shorted signal wire and a dead sensor produce identical scan tool readings: voltage below 0.3V. The code cannot tell the difference on its own. The correct first step is always to unplug the connector, inspect the terminals, and test resistance along the signal wire back to the PCM. Replacing the valve assembly without doing this first wastes money if the real problem is a frayed wire six inches away from the connector.

If the PCM cannot read a correct voltage under those conditions, that is the only scenario that justifies further PCM investigation.
