Every time a cylinder fires, the crankshaft position sensor detects a tiny surge in engine speed from the combustion event. A misfire is simply a cylinder that fails to fire — the crankshaft shows a brief hesitation instead of a surge, and the ECU logs it. When those misfires jump randomly between cylinders rather than staying in one place, P0300 is the result.

The "random" part is the key diagnostic challenge here. A misfire locked to one cylinder — P0301, P0302, and so on — points immediately to that cylinder's spark plug, coil, or injector. P0300, by jumping around, usually means a problem affecting the entire engine rather than one component.
