Your car has a secondary air injection (SAI) system. Its only job is to pump fresh air directly into the exhaust manifold for the first 30 to 90 seconds after a cold start. That extra oxygen helps burn off unburned fuel in the exhaust before the catalytic converter has warmed up enough to do that job on its own.

P0411 means the PCM (your engine's main computer) tested the SAI system during a cold start and detected that air flow was incorrect — either too little, in the wrong direction, or not flowing at all. The computer knows what the upstream oxygen sensor reading should look like when the air pump is working correctly. When the actual reading doesn't match, P0411 is stored.

Smell of unburned fuel at startup

Look for cracks, splits, kinks, and loose fittings. The hose is usually small-diameter rubber — about 5/8 inch — and runs near hot exhaust components, which accelerates deterioration. Squeeze the hose at the bends and connections: brittle rubber crumbles under light pressure. Any crack means the hose needs replacing.

Test the check valve by mouthFind the check valve — it sits on the air tube going into the exhaust manifold or the air injection rail. Remove it (usually just a clamp or two screws). Blow through it firmly in one direction, then the other. Air should pass freely in only one direction — toward the exhaust. If air flows freely in both directions, or not at all in either, the valve has failed. Complete system replacement should only happen if multiple components are confirmed bad during individual testing.
