Before anyone recommends a new alternator, the voltage regulator is where to look first. It's a fraction of the cost and takes an hour to test.

🔍 What This Code Means

Your car's electrical system runs at a carefully controlled voltage — ideally between 13.5V and 14.8V when the engine is running. The alternator generates the power; the voltage regulator keeps it in that safe range. P0563 fires when the PCM detects system voltage that has climbed above roughly 16V and stayed there.

Think of it like water pressure in a pipe. A little pressure is necessary — too much and the pipe bursts. At high voltage, the battery overheats and gases, sensitive electronics receive more current than they were designed for, and light bulbs burn out faster than normal. Left unchecked, this can destroy a brand-new battery in days and damage modules that are very expensive to replace.

⚡ P0563 is the opposite of P0562 (System Voltage Low). If you're seeing both codes at different times, the voltage regulator is failing erratically — fluctuating instead of holding steady.

The good news: in the majority of cases the problem is the voltage regulator, which on most vehicles is a replaceable component either inside the alternator or bolted to the back of it. You do not automatically need a complete alternator replacement.

Check engine light on
Often the first and only sign at moderate overcharge levels. The PCM logs P0563 before visible symptoms begin.
Battery warning light
The battery icon on the dash can indicate both over- and under-charging. Combined with P0563, it confirms a charging system fault.
Headlights noticeably bright
Lights that seem unusually intense — especially at higher RPM — are a classic sign of too much voltage reaching the bulbs.
Battery warm or swollen
A battery case that bulges at the sides or feels hot to the touch has been overcharged. This battery needs replacement regardless of age.
Electrical accessories behaving oddly
Radio resets, power windows moving slowly or erratically, HVAC blower running at wrong speeds — all signs of unstable voltage.
Burning smell from engine bay
A faint sulfur or plastic smell near the battery area can indicate the battery is boiling electrolyte due to overcharging.

Failing voltage regulator The voltage regulator is the component that tells the alternator how much to charge. When it fails, it can lose its upper limit — allowing the alternator to charge at full output regardless of what the system needs. On many vehicles the regulator is built into the back of the alternator and sold as a separate repair part.

🔧 What to Check First

These three checks require nothing more than a basic multimeter — available at any auto parts store for very little money. Do them in order. Many P0563 cases are either confirmed or clarified before ever touching the alternator.

Measure actual battery voltage with a multimeter Set your multimeter to DC volts. With the engine off, a good battery reads 12.4V to 12.8V. Start the engine and rev to about 2,000 RPM. Healthy charging voltage reads 13.5V to 14.8V. If your meter shows 15.5V or higher, the charging system is confirmed as overcharging. If it reads normal, the PCM's sensor circuit may be the issue — not the alternator.

Inspect the battery terminals and ground cables Turn the engine off. Wiggle both battery cables — they should have zero play. Look for white or blue corrosion buildup at the terminal clamps and at the other end of the ground strap where it bolts to the chassis. Corroded or loose grounds are invisible to the eye when under a layer of oxidation. Clean with a wire brush and baking soda solution, then retest voltage before going further.

Check whether your alternator has a serviceable voltage regulator Look up your year, make, and model plus "voltage regulator replacement." On many Ford, GM, and Chrysler vehicles from the 2000s–2010s the regulator is a bolt-on part at the back of the alternator that costs a fraction of a full alternator. On many vehicles the voltage regulator is a separate, inexpensive component bolted to the alternator. If a shop skips the regulator and quotes a full alternator replacement without confirming the regulator is non-serviceable on your specific vehicle, ask them to show you the parts diagram. A replacement alternator is a significant expense; a replacement regulator is not.

A new battery installed into a system that is still overcharging will be destroyed in days to weeks. Doing it the other way around means buying two batteries.

Can I drive with P0563 active?
Only for a very short distance to reach a repair shop. High system voltage actively damages sensitive electronics — the ECM, TCM, ABS module, and battery — with every mile driven. Unlike some codes where a short commute is acceptable risk, P0563 is actively destroying components while the engine is running. Do not drive it as a daily driver.
Why does my battery bulge or feel hot with P0563?
A charging voltage above 15.5V forces more current into the battery than it can absorb. Lead-acid batteries produce hydrogen gas and heat when overcharged — that heat is what causes the plastic case to swell. A swollen or warm battery case is a direct casualty of high-voltage charging and needs replacement after you fix the alternator or voltage regulator.
What voltage is normal vs. too high?
A healthy charging system reads 13.5V to 14.8V at the battery terminals with the engine running at about 2,000 RPM. P0563 typically triggers when voltage exceeds 16V. Anything consistently above 15.5V is in overcharging territory and will begin damaging the battery and electronics over time — even if it hasn't tripped the code yet.
If I replace the alternator, do I also need a new battery?
Very likely yes — but confirm it first. A battery that has been overcharged has its internal plates damaged by heat and outgassing even if it still holds a surface charge. Have the battery load-tested after installing the new alternator. If it fails a load test, replace it. Do not replace it blindly before testing; some batteries survive short overcharge events without lasting damage.
My lights flicker and the voltage is all over the place — is that P0563?
Flickering lights with erratic voltage could be P0563 (consistently high) or P0562 (consistently low) depending on which direction the swing goes. It can also indicate a failing alternator diode, which causes AC ripple on the DC charging line — the voltage looks unstable because it partially is. Hook up a multimeter or scan tool live data and watch what the voltage actually does under different loads before replacing anything.
