Your car runs on a 12-volt electrical system. When the engine is running, the alternator keeps system voltage between 13.5 and 14.5 volts — just above the battery's resting level — so everything from the ignition coils to the fuel injectors gets a clean, stable power supply.

P0562 is set by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) when it detects system voltage has dropped below a threshold — typically under 10 volts for a sustained period, though the exact threshold varies slightly by manufacturer. At that point the PCM can no longer guarantee accurate readings from its own sensors, so it logs the fault and usually illuminates the check engine light.

🔧 What to Check First

Do these three checks before spending anything. You need only a digital multimeter — available at any hardware store for very little — and about 20 minutes.

Check battery terminal condition and tightness Look at both battery terminals. White or greenish powder is corrosion — it restricts current flow and directly causes low voltage readings. Mix a tablespoon of baking soda into a cup of water and pour it over each terminal. It will fizz on contact with corrosion. Scrub with an old toothbrush, rinse with plain water, and dry. Also wiggle each cable — a terminal that moves at all is loose and must be tightened. This free check resolves P0562 more often than most people expect.

Measure battery resting voltage and charging voltage Set your multimeter to DC voltage (20V range). Touch the red probe to the positive terminal, black to negative. Engine off: a healthy battery reads 12.4–12.7V. Below 12.2V means the battery is significantly discharged or failing. Now start the engine and measure again. Engine running at idle: reading should be 13.5–14.5V. If it reads below 13.0V while running, the alternator is undercharging and is the likely root cause — replacing the battery without fixing the alternator will result in the same code coming back.

Disconnect the negative battery cable and connect your multimeter in series between the cable and the terminal (set to 10A range first, then drop to milliamps). My battery is brand new. Can it still cause P0562?
Yes. A new battery only solves the problem if the battery was the root cause. If the alternator is weak, it will undercharge any battery — new or old.
