The transmission range sensor — sometimes called the neutral safety switch or PRNDL switch — tells your transmission control module (TCM) exactly which gear position you have selected: Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, or one of the lower drive ranges. The TCM uses this information to decide which gear to engage, whether to allow the starter to crank, and when to illuminate the reverse lights.

P0705 sets when the TCM detects a signal from the range sensor that falls outside expected parameters or contradicts itself — for example, receiving voltage that matches no known gear position, or signals for two positions at once.

💡 "PRNDL" stands for Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Low — the positions shown on your gear indicator. When this sensor misbehaves, that dashboard display often shows the wrong position or goes blank entirely.

Without a reliable gear position signal, the TCM defaults to a failsafe strategy — typically limp mode locked in a single gear, a no-start condition, or the inability to select Reverse. The underlying cause is almost never the sensor itself.

Inspect the TRS connector and wiring harnessLocate the transmission range sensor — it sits on the side of the transmission case where the shift linkage connects. Unplug the connector and look closely at every pin. Green or white corrosion, bent pins, and cracked wire insulation are all red flags.
