Injector Circuit Malfunction (Cylinder 3) β Causes & What It Costs to Fix
P0203 points directly at cylinder 3's fuel injector circuit β but that does not automatically mean a new injector. Before anyone recommends a full injector replacement, read this guide. A broken connector or a frayed wire resolves this code for a fraction of the cost.
P0203 is a circuit fault code, not a mechanical failure code. It means your engine control module (ECM) sent an electrical signal to cylinder 3's fuel injector and got back a response it did not expect β or nothing at all. The injector may be stuck open, stuck closed, shorted internally, or the wiring between the ECM and the injector may be broken.
The ECM controls each injector by briefly completing an electrical circuit β pulsing it open for a precise number of milliseconds to deliver fuel. When it monitors that circuit and sees resistance outside the normal range, it stores P0203 and lights the check engine light. In most cases it also stops firing that injector entirely as a protective measure, leaving cylinder 3 without fuel.
Because cylinder 3 stops firing, you will almost certainly also see a P0303 misfire code alongside P0203. If both appear together, the injector circuit is almost always the root cause. Start there before assuming the ignition system is at fault.
P0203 tends to be obvious β a dead cylinder is hard to miss. Here is what to expect when cylinder 3 is not firing correctly.
Ranked from most common to least common. Work through them in order β the cheapest checks come first, and they catch the problem in the majority of cases.
These three checks require no special tools and cost nothing except your time. Run through all three before spending a cent on parts β they identify the cause in roughly 6 out of 10 P0203 cases.
P0203 is commonly misread as an ignition fault or a general misfire. These are the three most expensive wrong turns β and how to avoid them.
DIY cost = parts only. Shop cost = parts plus labor. Ranges vary by vehicle, region, and shop rate. Use these as a planning guide β not a fixed quote.
P0203 appears on any gasoline vehicle with port or direct fuel injection. These models generate the most verified reports based on owner data and repair records.
