Your engine computer — the ECM — controls each fuel injector by sending a precise electrical pulse through a dedicated circuit. That pulse tells the injector exactly when to open and how long to stay open. P0202 means the ECM detected something wrong with that circuit on cylinder 2 specifically.

Think of it like a broken wire on a light switch. The switch (ECM) is working fine. The bulb (injector) might be fine. But if the wire between them is broken, frayed, or corroded, the light goes out — and the circuit reports a fault.

💡 P0202 is a circuit fault code, not necessarily an injector code. The ECM is telling you the electrical signal is abnormal. It is not telling you the injector is dead. Always test the circuit before ordering parts.

Without fuel, cylinder 2 misfires every time it fires. This not only hurts performance — the raw fuel that should have burned in the cylinder gets pushed out the exhaust valves, where it can overheat and permanently damage your catalytic converter in a surprisingly short amount of time.

A flashing check engine light — not steady — means an active misfire is occurring right now. P0202 frequently triggers a flashing light because the misfire is continuous.
Significant power loss
Acceleration feels sluggish and labored. On a 4-cylinder you've lost 25% of your power output. On a V6 it's about 17%. You'll feel it immediately.
Strong fuel smell from exhaust
Unburned fuel passing through the exhaust smells noticeably rich. If you catch this smell standing behind the car at idle, act quickly — the converter is at risk.
P0302 misfire code appearing together

P0202 is a circuit code — but shops often treat it as a parts code. These three shortcuts end up costing real money when the actual problem was much simpler.

⚠ Misdiagnosis #1 — Injector replaced without testing the circuit first
A fuel injector is not a cheap part, and on some engines it's a labor-heavy job to access. The correct procedure is to test injector resistance, test the wiring continuity, and verify the ECM is sending a signal — before ordering a replacement. If a shop quotes an injector replacement the same day the code was pulled without showing you any test data, ask to see the resistance readings first.

⚠ Misdiagnosis #2 — ECM replaced when the driver circuit wasn't properly isolated

A failed ECM driver is diagnosed last, not first. If someone recommends ECM replacement before a thorough wiring inspection and injector test, get a second opinion immediately.
