Diesel engines do not use spark plugs. Instead, they ignite fuel through heat — the compression of air alone raises cylinder temperature high enough to combust diesel fuel. But on a cold morning, that air isn't warm enough yet. That's where glow plugs come in.

Glow plugs are electrically heated rods installed in each cylinder. When you turn the key, they pre-heat the combustion chamber for a few seconds before the engine cranks. The dashboard icon — usually a coil or spiral symbol — tells you when they're done warming up.
