Every cylinder in your engine fires in a precise sequence — compress the air-fuel mixture, ignite it, push the piston down. P0301 means that cycle is failing on Cylinder 1 specifically. The crankshaft position sensor detects an irregular rotation pattern — the signature of one cylinder not contributing its share of power — and the computer logs a misfire event.

Unlike a generic misfire code (P0300, which can cycle between cylinders), P0301 is pinned to one cylinder. That specificity is actually useful — it tells you exactly where to start looking.

Check engine light — solid or flashing

Fuel smell from exhaust
Unburned fuel passes through the misfiring cylinder and exits raw through the tailpipe. You may smell it clearly while idling, especially on cold starts.
Reduced power and sluggish response

Pull and inspect the Cylinder 1 spark plug Locate Cylinder 1 (usually the plug closest to the front of the engine on inline engines). Remove it and look at the tip. Can I drive with P0301 active?
Only to get to a shop — no further. A misfiring cylinder dumps raw unburned fuel into the exhaust stream. That fuel ignites inside the catalytic converter, overheating and destroying it within miles of sustained driving. A catalytic converter replacement is significantly more expensive than whatever caused the misfire in the first place. If the check engine light is flashing, stop driving immediately.
Why does P0301 come back after I replace the spark plug?
A new plug is only one piece of the ignition puzzle. If the coil pack feeding Cylinder 1 is weak, it will misfire on a brand-new plug just as easily as an old one.
