Your catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system. Its job is to chemically convert harmful gases — carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides — into less harmful ones before they exit the tailpipe. It does this using a honeycomb structure coated in precious metals (platinum, palladium, rhodium).
Your car monitors the converter using two oxygen sensors: one before the cat (upstream) and one after (downstream). A healthy converter scrubs exhaust so efficiently that the downstream sensor sees very little remaining oxygen fluctuation — it reads a steady signal around 0.6–0.7 volts. When the downstream Bank 2 sensor starts mimicking the upstream sensor's rapid switching, the ECM concludes the converter is no longer doing its job, and P0430 is set.
Critically, P0430 does not confirm the catalytic converter is dead. It confirms that the Bank 2 downstream oxygen sensor is reporting inefficient conversion. The converter itself, a faulty sensor, or an underlying engine condition could each be responsible.
