Your fuel tank is always producing vapors — gasoline evaporates even when the engine is off. The EVAP (Evaporative Emission Control) system exists to capture those vapors and route them back into the engine to be burned rather than venting into the atmosphere. It's a sealed network of hoses, valves, a charcoal canister, and the gas cap itself.

The ECU periodically runs an EVAP monitor test. It closes the vent valve, commands the purge valve open to draw a slight vacuum across the entire sealed system, then watches how quickly that vacuum bleeds away. A healthy system holds vacuum. P0442 is set when pressure drops faster than expected — specifically at a rate consistent with a hole smaller than 0.040 inches (roughly the diameter of a pencil lead). That's a very small leak.

💡 P0442 is the "small leak" code. P0455 means a large or gross leak — typically a missing or wide-open gas cap. P0456 means an even tinier leak than P0442. If you have P0455, check your gas cap immediately; it may simply be missing.

A cracked hose often looks fine from a distance — flex it gently with your fingers at the bends and near the fittings where stress concentrates. Any hose that crumbles, shows a visible crack, or feels rock-hard rather than pliable needs replacing. EVAP hose by the foot is inexpensive at any auto parts store.

Listen for the purge valve at cold startThe purge valve makes a faint clicking or buzzing sound when the ECU commands it open — typically in the first few minutes after a cold start as the engine warms up. Locate the purge valve (usually a small black solenoid on a hose near the intake manifold or throttle body) and listen for that sound. No sound at all during warm-up may indicate a failed solenoid. A valve that is audibly clicking but P0442 persists suggests it's leaking slightly when commanded closed — which requires replacement rather than cleaning.
