Your car's EVAP (Evaporative Emission Control) system exists for one reason: to prevent raw fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. Instead of venting to the outside, fuel vapors from the gas tank are captured in a charcoal canister and held there until the engine is ready to burn them.

The purge valve (also called the purge solenoid) is the gate between that canister and the intake manifold. The engine computer controls it β€” opening the valve at specific moments so the stored vapors flow into the engine and get burned during normal combustion. When that valve is closed, no vapor should flow at all.
