EVAP System High Purge Flow β What's Causing It & How to Fix It
P0496 shows up and most shops jump straight to recommending a new purge valve. But before you spend money on parts, know this β a stuck-open purge solenoid is only one of several possible causes, and one of them costs nothing at all to fix yourself.
Your car's EVAP (Evaporative Emission Control) system exists for one reason: to prevent raw fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. Instead of venting to the outside, fuel vapors from the gas tank are captured in a charcoal canister and held there until the engine is ready to burn them.
The purge valve (also called the purge solenoid) is the gate between that canister and the intake manifold. The engine computer controls it β opening the valve at specific moments so the stored vapors flow into the engine and get burned during normal combustion. When that valve is closed, no vapor should flow at all.
P0496 means the computer has detected vapor flow through the purge valve when it commanded the valve shut. Something is letting vapors through when they shouldn't be moving.
This is an emissions fault first and a drivability fault second. Your car will run, but fuel vapor entering at the wrong time disrupts the air-fuel mixture, causes rough idle, and means unburned hydrocarbons are likely escaping. It will not pass an emissions inspection with this code active.
P0496 is often subtle. Some drivers only notice the check engine light. Others experience one or two symptoms that are easy to confuse with unrelated issues.
