At idle your engine needs a precise trickle of air to keep running smoothly — far less than when you're actually driving. Your engine computer (PCM) manages this through the Idle Air Control (IAC) system, which controls a small bypass passage around the main throttle plate. When the PCM sees that actual idle speed no longer matches its target — and that the system cannot correct it — it stores P0505.

Think of it like a thermostat that can't hold the right temperature. The system is working, but something is preventing it from hitting its mark. Idle speed typically should sit between 600 and 800 RPM on a warm engine. P0505 fires when that target keeps being missed and the computer has run out of correction range.

Clean the throttle body Remove the air intake hose from the throttle body (two clamps, about 3 minutes). With the engine cold, spray dedicated throttle body cleaner inside the bore and around the throttle plate, then wipe away carbon deposits with a clean cloth. A vacuum leak sounds like a faint whistle or hiss. Squeeze rubber hoses at bends — cracked rubber crumbles or collapses under pressure.
