Your engine has a small sensor sitting inside the intake air stream — the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. It tells the ECU how warm or cold the incoming air is. That information matters because cold, dense air needs more fuel than hot, thin air. Get the temperature reading wrong and the fuel mixture goes with it.
The IAT sensor works as a simple voltage divider. At cold temperatures (like -40°F / -40°C), the sensor's resistance is very high and the signal wire reads close to 5 volts. As air warms up, resistance drops and voltage drops too — settling around 2–2.5 volts at room temperature and below 1 volt on a hot engine.
The critical thing to understand: a high voltage reading usually means an open circuit, not a bad sensor. When a wire breaks or a connector pulls loose, the signal wire has no return path and floats up to the reference voltage (5V). The sensor itself is often perfectly fine.
P0113 won't leave your car stranded, but it will make the engine behave differently — especially first thing in the morning or in changing weather.
