The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor sits inside the intake tube between the air filter and the throttle body. Its job is to measure exactly how much air is entering the engine — every second, at every RPM. The ECM uses that number to calculate how much fuel to inject for the correct 14.7:1 air-fuel ratio.

P0102 is set when the MAF sensor's output voltage drops below the minimum threshold the ECM will accept — typically under 0.2 volts. At that point the ECM stops trusting the sensor entirely and switches to an internal substitute fuel map. That substitute map keeps the engine running, but it is a rough estimate, not a precise calibration.

💡 The MAF sensor generates a voltage signal that rises with airflow. At idle, a healthy sensor typically reads 0.8–1.5 V. Under hard acceleration it can reach 4.5 V or higher. A reading stuck below 0.2 V is what triggers P0102.

🔧 What to Check First

Run through these three checks before spending anything. They cover the majority of P0102 cases and require nothing more than a screwdriver and a can of cleaner.

Inspect and replace the air filter Pop the airbox lid and pull the filter out. Hold it up to a light source. If you cannot see light through the filter medium, it is overdue for replacement. A clogged filter directly reduces airflow to the MAF sensor and can cause P0102 all on its own. On oiled aftermarket filters — like K&N — check that the filter was not over-oiled after the last cleaning. Excess oil migrates to the MAF element and coats it.

Clean the MAF sensor with dedicated MAF cleaner Disconnect the battery for 10 seconds, then unplug the MAF sensor connector and remove the sensor (usually two Torx screws). Hold the sensor so the element faces down. Spray dedicated MAF sensor cleaner only — never brake cleaner, carburetor cleaner, or WD-40. These solvents permanently damage the delicate sensing wire. Apply 10–15 short bursts from 2 inches away and allow to air dry fully for at least 15 minutes before reinstalling. Clear the code and drive 50–75 miles before reading results.

Check the wiring connector and harness With the engine off, unplug the MAF connector and inspect the pins closely. Look for green corrosion, bent pins, or melted plastic. Plug it back in firmly and make sure the locking tab clicks. Then trace the wire harness back toward the firewall — look for any section that has rubbed against a hot exhaust component or chafed through its insulation. Repair or replace corroded connectors before spending money on a new sensor.
