The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor sits in the intake pipe between your air filter and throttle body. Its job is to measure exactly how much air is flowing into the engine every second — reported in grams per second (g/s). The ECU uses that number to calculate how much fuel to inject. Get the airflow reading wrong, and the fuel mixture goes with it.

P0101 is a range and performance fault — not a hard circuit failure. The sensor is producing a signal, but the ECU has compared that signal against other data (throttle position, engine RPM, MAP sensor) and decided the numbers don't match reality. At idle a typical engine should read 2–7 g/s. Under hard acceleration on a 4-cylinder engine, you'd expect 80–120 g/s. A dirty sensor that under-reports might read 40 g/s at wide-open throttle — and the ECU flags that mismatch as P0101.

💡 The key distinction: P0101 is not the same as P0102 or P0103. Those codes mean the signal voltage is outside acceptable limits — the sensor has failed electrically. P0101 means the signal looks plausible electrically, but it doesn't match what should be happening based on other sensor data. It's a logic check, not a voltage check.

This matters because a dirty sensor that under-reads will pass a voltage test and still set P0101. You cannot clear this code by checking voltage alone — you need to evaluate the airflow numbers against actual engine conditions.

Noticeably worse fuel economy
When the ECU gets wrong airflow data it miscalculates the fuel injection amount — usually running richer than needed and burning extra fuel.
Black smoke from exhaust
A severely under-reporting MAF sensor can cause the engine to run very rich, pushing unburned fuel out the exhaust as dark smoke under acceleration.
Loss of power under load
Noticeable power deficit when climbing hills, towing, or accelerating hard. The engine feels sluggish and doesn't respond the way it used to.
Stalling at idle or after start
On a severely dirty or failing MAF sensor, the engine may stall shortly after starting from cold, particularly in cooler weather.
