P0155 sounds complicated, but the heater circuit is just a small wire inside the oxygen sensor that warms it up quickly on cold starts. Before your shop recommends a full sensor replacement, spend 10 minutes checking the wiring — in many cases that is the entire fix, and it costs nothing but your time.

🔍 What This Code Means

Every modern oxygen sensor contains two separate circuits inside it. The first is the sensing element that measures exhaust oxygen. The second — the one P0155 is about — is a small internal heater element that brings the sensor up to operating temperature within about 20–30 seconds of a cold start.

Without that heater working, the sensor stays cold and cannot measure accurately. The ECU is forced to run on estimated fuel trims during the warm-up phase instead of real oxygen data. P0155 is set when the ECU sends power to that heater circuit and measures the current response — and what it gets back is outside the expected range.

💡 Bank 2, Sensor 1 means the upstream (pre-catalyst) oxygen sensor on the side of the engine that does NOT contain cylinder #1. This code will only appear on V6, V8, or other multi-bank engines — not on inline 4-cylinder engines. Inline-4 owners would see P0135 instead.

Important: the heater failing does not mean the sensing element has failed. These are two independent circuits. A sensor can read exhaust oxygen perfectly well yet still set P0155 if the heater wire is broken — which is exactly why jumping straight to replacement is the wrong first move.

P0155 is a heater circuit fault, not a combustion fault. Day-to-day drivability is usually normal. Here is what to watch for, especially in cold weather.

Check engine light only
Most drivers notice nothing but the warning light. The engine feels completely normal because the heater only matters during the first 30 seconds of a cold start.
Slightly rough cold start
Without a fast-heating sensor, the ECU takes longer to close the loop and transition out of open-loop enrichment. May feel mildly uneven for the first 30–60 seconds.
Worse fuel economy in winter
Open-loop warm-up runs rich by design. With a dead heater the open-loop phase stretches longer than normal, burning more fuel than necessary on every cold start.
Failed emissions test
Any active OBD2 fault code — including P0155 — is an automatic failure in most emissions inspection programs, even if the car drives perfectly.
Slightly elevated fuel trim
Long-term fuel trim may drift slightly while the ECU compensates for delayed sensor data, though this is rarely dramatic enough to set additional codes.
No noticeable symptom at all
In warm climates especially, some drivers run for months without noticing anything beyond the warning light. That does not mean the code is harmless — it still affects emissions and efficiency.

These three steps require no special equipment beyond a basic multimeter — and step one requires nothing at all. Work through them before spending any money on a sensor.

Check the heater fuse first — takes 60 secondsOpen the under-hood fuse box and locate the fuse for the O2 sensor heaters. Your owner's manual or the fuse box cover diagram will identify it — look for labels like "O2 HTR," "HO2S," or "Heated Oxygen." Pull the fuse and hold it up to light. If the wire inside is broken, replace it with a fuse of identical amperage. If it blows again immediately, there is a short in the wiring harness — do not keep replacing fuses.

Inspect the wiring harness from the ECU to the sensorWith the engine cold and off, trace the two heater wires (usually white or gray on most vehicles, separate from the sensing signal wires) from the sensor connector up along the harness toward the firewall. Look for melted insulation near the exhaust manifold or heat shield, corroded connector pins, or any cuts in the loom. Wiggle the harness while checking for intermittent continuity with a multimeter. A broken wire at the connector is the most common single cause of P0155 — and the cheapest fix.

Measure the sensor's heater resistance with a multimeterDisconnect the O2 sensor connector and set your multimeter to ohms (Ω). Probe the two heater circuit terminals inside the sensor side of the connector — your service manual identifies which pins are the heater wires. A healthy heater element reads between 3 and 30 ohms depending on the vehicle. A reading of OL (open loop / infinite) means the heater element inside the sensor is burned out and the sensor needs replacement. A reading of 0 ohms indicates a short inside the sensor — also replace it.

⚠️ Common Misdiagnosis

P0155 is one of the most mishandled codes at independent shops — not because it is complex, but because the fastest solution is also the most profitable. These are the three traps to avoid before handing over any money.

⚠ Misdiagnosis #1 — Sensor replaced without checking the wiring first
The heater circuit runs through connectors and a wiring harness that ages alongside the sensor. A corroded connector pin or a cracked wire can set P0155 just as reliably as a failed heater element — and a wire repair costs almost nothing. Installing a new sensor into a broken wiring harness will set P0155 again immediately. Any repair that skips a harness inspection first is working backward.

⚠ Misdiagnosis #2 — Catalytic converter blamed for downstream codes triggered by P0155
A cold upstream sensor running in open-loop for too long can cause fuel trim disruptions that eventually trigger additional fault codes — including codes that point toward the catalyst. Before any shop diagnoses a catalytic converter problem alongside P0155, the heater circuit must be repaired and all codes cleared first. Chasing P0420 or P0430 while P0155 is active is a diagnostic dead end.

⚠ Misdiagnosis #3 — Both Bank 2 sensors replaced when only Sensor 1 is at fault
P0155 specifically identifies Sensor 1 — the upstream sensor before the catalytic converter. Some shops quote both upstream and downstream sensors together "while they are in there." Sensor 2 (P0141) is a separate circuit and has its own code. Unless P0141 is also stored, Sensor 2 does not need to be touched. Confirm which sensor is at fault by code number before authorizing any work.

Can I drive with P0155 active?
Short-term, yes — P0155 is not an immediate mechanical emergency. Your engine will still run. However, while the heater is dead the ECU relies on estimated fuel trims during cold starts instead of real oxygen sensor data, which hurts fuel economy and increases emissions. Do not ignore it for more than a week or two of regular driving.
Why does P0155 keep coming back after I clear it?
Clearing the code removes the warning light, not the fault. The ECU tests the heater circuit every cold start. If the heater element is burned out, the wiring is damaged, or the fuse has blown again, the code will return within one or two drive cycles. Find and fix the root cause first.
What is Bank 2 and where is it on my engine?
Bank 2 is the side of the engine that does NOT contain cylinder number 1. On V6 and V8 engines this is typically the passenger side in rear-wheel-drive vehicles, though layout varies by manufacturer. On inline 4-cylinder engines there is only one bank, so P0155 will not appear on those vehicles — you would see P0135 instead.
What is Sensor 1 versus Sensor 2?
