🔍 What This Code Means

Your engine is designed to burn fuel at a precise ratio of 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel. P0174 tells you that ratio is off on Bank 2 — too much air or too little fuel is reaching that side of the engine. The engine computer has been trying to compensate by adding extra fuel, but it has hit the limit of what it can correct on its own.

Your scan tool will show this as Long Term Fuel Trim (LTFT) Bank 2 climbing above +10%. That number is essentially the computer waving a white flag — it is telling you the problem is beyond normal self-correction.

💡 Bank 2 is the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder #1. On most inline 4-cylinder engines, P0174 cannot exist — those engines only have one bank. P0174 is exclusive to V6, V8, V10, and flat (boxer) engines with two distinct cylinder banks.

When P0174 shows up solo, the problem is usually isolated to the Bank 2 side — a vacuum leak in that intake runner, a failing Bank 2 oxygen sensor, or clogged injectors on that bank. When P0174 and P0171 appear together, the likely culprit is something that affects both banks at once, like a dirty MAF sensor or a large intake manifold leak.

Hesitation under acceleration
Stumble or surge when pressing the gas from a stop, especially noticeable in low gears at low speed.
Reduced fuel economy
The computer dumps extra fuel to compensate for the lean condition. Your MPG drops even though it feels like you're burning less efficiently.
Loss of power under load
Noticeably less pull when merging onto a highway, towing, or climbing a steep grade at speed.
Occasional engine ping or knock

🔧 What to Check First

Inspect all vacuum hoses — especially on the Bank 2 side Pop the hood and work your way around every rubber hose connected to the intake manifold. Squeeze each one — old rubber cracks without looking obviously broken. Pay close attention to the large intake boot between the air filter housing and the throttle body, and to any small vacuum lines tucked near the firewall. A hissing sound at idle confirms a leak immediately. This is the free fix that ends P0174 cases most often.

Clean the MAF sensor Use only MAF-specific electrical cleaner — never brake cleaner or generic carb cleaner. Remove the sensor from its housing, spray 10–12 short bursts on the sensing wires, and let it fully dry before reinstalling. Drive at least 50 miles and recheck LTFT Bank 2 on a scanner. If LTFT drops toward 0%, the sensor was dirty, not dead. An inexpensive can of MAF cleaner has ended more lean code nightmares than any other fix on this list.

Test the PCV valve With the engine running, pinch shut the PCV hose for 5–10 seconds. Idle should roughen noticeably — if it does not change at all, the valve is stuck open and needs replacement. Also inspect the hose itself for cracks or soft spots. A new PCV valve costs very little and takes 10 minutes to replace. Cheap, easy, and frequently overlooked.
