P0302 locks the misfire onto one specific cylinder — and that is actually good news. You do not have to guess. Before your shop replaces injectors, coils, and plugs all at once, there is a five-minute test that narrows it down to one component and costs you absolutely nothing.
Your engine fires each cylinder in a set sequence. Every time one cylinder fires, the crankshaft rotates a precise amount. P0302 means the computer detected a rotational irregularity that matches Cylinder 2 not completing its power stroke — the mixture was not burned, or was burned too weakly to move the piston properly.
The ECM counts misfire events over a rolling window of engine revolutions. When Cylinder 2 misfires frequently enough to trigger the threshold — typically around 2% of firing events within 1,000 RPM — the code is stored and the check engine light comes on. If the rate exceeds a second, higher threshold, the light will flash rather than stay on solid.
The cylinder-specific nature of P0302 is an advantage. Unlike P0300 (random misfire), which can bounce between cylinders and is harder to diagnose, P0302 tells you exactly where to start. In most cases a single inexpensive part is the culprit, and the swap test below confirms which one in minutes.
