🔍 What This Code Means

Your engine control module (ECM) needs to know exactly how fast the engine is spinning — every single moment. It uses this RPM signal to time the fuel injectors and the ignition coils with precise accuracy. P0320 means the ECM has detected a problem with the circuit that delivers that signal.

On older vehicles with a distributor, the signal comes from a pickup coil inside the distributor. On modern engines it comes from a crankshaft position sensor (CKP) — a small magnetic sensor mounted near the crankshaft reluctor ring. Either way, P0320 is telling you the signal arriving at the ECM is intermittent, out of range, or completely absent.

💡 P0320 is a generic OBD2 code covering the entire "engine speed input circuit." It does not tell you which specific component has failed — only that the circuit has a fault. That's why diagnosis matters more here than it does for simpler codes.

This is not a code you park and forget. The ECM may be able to keep the engine running on a degraded signal for a while — but at some point the signal drops out entirely and the engine dies. That can happen at 65 mph just as easily as at idle.

Rough or erratic idle
RPM fluctuates unpredictably at a stop. Engine shudders, hunts for a stable idle, or feels like it's about to die.
Hard start or no-start
Engine cranks normally but won't fire. Without an RPM signal the ECM cannot trigger injectors or spark — a dead sensor causes a complete no-start.
Hesitation and misfires
Stumbles or jerks during acceleration as the ECM momentarily loses timing reference and injection sync.
Tachometer drops to zero
The tachometer needle falls to zero while the engine is still running — a clear sign the ECM has lost its RPM input signal.
Check engine light only
On some vehicles early failures show no drivability problems yet. The code is stored as a pending fault before symptoms become obvious.

Unplug the connector and look for: green corrosion on the pins, bent or pushed-back terminals, cracked insulation on the wires, and bare copper where the harness bends around engine components. P0320 leads to some of the most expensive unnecessary repairs in the diagnostic world. These are the three traps that catch people most often — knowing them before your shop visit could save you a lot.

⚠ Misdiagnosis #1 — CKP sensor replaced before inspecting the wiring
The sensor gets replaced first because it's the most obvious suspect and the easiest part to swap. But damaged wiring is the actual cause in more cases than a failed sensor. If the harness is broken, a brand-new sensor produces the identical fault within hours. The right sequence is always: inspect wiring → test connector → then replace sensor if wiring checks out clean.
