Your engine's computer uses the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor to measure how hot or cold the incoming air is. Colder air is denser and carries more oxygen — so the computer adjusts the fuel mixture accordingly. Get the temperature wrong and the fuel mixture gets wrong too.
P0111 is a range/performance fault — meaning the sensor's voltage is technically within the acceptable electrical range (it's not dead or shorted), but the readings don't match expected real-world conditions. For example, the sensor reports 140°F on a 50°F morning, or the temperature doesn't budge at all after a cold start when it should climb steadily as the engine warms up.
The IAT sensor is usually built into the mass air flow (MAF) sensor housing or plugged directly into the intake duct near the air filter. On most vehicles it's a two-wire sensor. When the computer sees temperature data that contradicts other sensor inputs — like coolant temperature or ambient conditions after a long cold soak — it sets P0111.
