🔍 What This Code Means

Your upstream O2 sensor (Bank 2, Sensor 1) generates a voltage signal that swings between roughly 0.1V and 0.9V as the engine alternates between lean and rich cycles. That constant switching is exactly what the computer wants to see — it means the sensor is alive and the fuel mixture is being fine-tuned in real time.

P0152 fires when that voltage gets stuck above 0.9V and stays there. To the computer, a high O2 voltage means rich — too much fuel relative to air. When the signal refuses to drop, the computer either cannot compensate fast enough or suspects the sensor has failed and locks the code.

💡 Bank 2 is the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder #1. On most V6 and V8 engines in American vehicles this is the passenger side. Sensor 1 is the upstream sensor, mounted before the catalytic converter in the exhaust stream. P0152 only appears on V-configuration engines — inline four-cylinders have just one bank.

The important thing to understand is that a high-voltage reading does not automatically mean the engine is actually running rich. The sensor or its circuit could be lying. Visible dark smoke from the tailpipe is a strong sign of a genuine rich condition — unburned fuel passing through the exhaust system.
Sulfur or rotten egg smell
A rich mixture overloads the catalytic converter with unburned hydrocarbons, causing it to produce hydrogen sulfide gas. This is a warning sign that the converter is under stress.
Failed emissions test
With an active fault code and a possible rich condition, most vehicles will not pass an OBD2 emissions inspection until the code is resolved and the readiness monitors complete.
