Your engine fires each cylinder with a precisely timed spark. That spark comes from an ignition coil — a small transformer that converts your car's 12-volt battery power into the 20,000–40,000 volts needed to jump the gap in a spark plug. P0353 means the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detected an unexpected voltage reading in the circuit controlling Ignition Coil C — either in its primary winding (the low-voltage side) or its secondary winding (the high-voltage side).

The code does not automatically mean the coil is dead. The PCM monitors the circuit continuously, and anything that disrupts the expected signal — a bad plug, a corroded connector, a broken wire, or a failing coil — will trigger P0353.

Check engine light flashing
A flashing or blinking check engine light — not a steady one — means a misfire is actively happening. This is a serious warning. Pull over when safe to do so.
Hesitation under acceleration
The engine bogs, stumbles, or surges when you press the gas from a stop or try to pass on the highway. One cylinder not firing robs the engine of power.
Hard start or no-start
If the coil circuit has completely failed, the engine may crank without catching — especially on small 3- or 4-cylinder engines where every cylinder counts more.
Fuel smell from exhaust
Unburned fuel from the dead cylinder exits through the exhaust. You may smell raw gasoline, especially at idle or immediately after starting a cold engine.
Loss of fuel economy
The PCM compensates for the misfire by adding extra fuel. MPG drops noticeably over several tanks. The longer P0353 is ignored, the more fuel is wasted.
